Throughout each week, our class earns happy or sad faces for their  behavior on the rug during lessons.  If they earn more happies than sass, they get a small reward. Last Friday's reward was some free choice time of games/activities during Math.  Here is a glimpse of their fun.

Playing together

Sometimes a teacher just has to "gush".  After a jam packed week, and our first full week in a long time, a rainy Friday with no outdoor recess is not what I would have hoped for.  However, we had a terrific day. Everyone worked hard and did a great job on a usually difficult writing lesson, they earned a paw from another teacher for walking so nicely in the hallway, and they played extremely nicely together during indoor recess. Way to go Room 8!

Here are some snapshots of recess time. All children engaged in a game, puzzle, or other activity. No arguments or complaints. And no one left out. Might not sound like a big deal, but doesn't always happen and was very nice to see.

Tie Dye Fun

Thank you to Mrs. Smith (Cooper's mom)  for helping us tie dye and especially for taking home the shirts and washing them all.  The children had lots of fun and they came out great.

First day of school!!

We had a super first day today. The students came in and got settled like true first graders. Please remember to check your child's folder every day and send back forms. I know there's so much information that comes home at the beginning of the year. It will settle down.
We spent today getting to know each other, learning new routines and going over rules and expectations.  Will post some first day pictures soon. If you do not want pictures of your child posted, you need to send in the "opt out" form that was mailed home so that I know not to include him/her.
Looking forward to a wonderful year and hope everyone will be "reaching for the stars"

Welcome To Room 8

Teacher letters have gone out and I know some of you might be visiting to check out your new teacher.  Welcome! I hope you had a wonderful summer and are ready for a great year. I can't wait to meet you. Here's a little bit about me...I've been teaching at Springdale for over 15 years and I love teaching first grade.  I grew up in Stamford and live here now with my husband and 3 children. My oldest son is going to be a senior in high school which I can't believe, my daughter Is going into high school and my youngest son just turned 12 this past week. They are getting way too big and I'm so glad that I still get to spend my days with 5 and 6 year olds. It's a lot of fun.
First grade will be a lot of work but it is also fun and very exciting. Your children will become super readers, writers and scientists. They are going to learn and grow so much and I'm looking forward to being a part of it.
I'm actually heading to school now to start setting up.  I will post more information about our classroom and include some pictures next week so please check back soon.
Here are a couple photos from my summer.
My family during our trip to DC this past week (minus my daughter who was taking the picture)
Our new kitty Ginny who is very cute but is getting into lots of trouble
See you soon!

Mental Health Awareness Week

Sorry it's been a while. We've been very busy, especially getting our nonfiction animal books ready for our museum next week.
We did make time to celebrate Mental Health Awareness week.  Talking about feelings, and expressing them appropriately is something that we've been talking about all year but it was great to have a week for it to be a priority.
Each morning we discussed the feeling of the day (excitement, worry, frustration, and pride). Later in we read a story that went with the feeling and completed a page in our feelings journal.  Here's a glimps of what we did.

Everyone loved decorating their journals with emojis :)
